Serenity in September
Nailed It! The kids and I have been watching the show Nailed It recently. Serenity asked if we could try one of the designs at home. Of course, the answer was YES! We went to Michael’s and bought fondant and coloring, and she baked a couple round cakes and let them thoroughly cool. She acknowledged that since she didn’t have the time limit, she had a much easier job than the people on the show, but she did an amazing job! It ended up looking just like the picture. I think she’s absorbed a lot of the baking tips from the show =)
Serenity’s main activity this year is Girl Scouts! The girls are trying to earn their Bronze award. They are still discussing ideas for their project. It’s so interesting now that they are in fifth grade, I need to mostly stand back and let them figure things out. They want to do a project for Claremore lake, maybe planting trees or cleaning up, and I had to point out that if they just pick up the garbage once, it comes back, and a Bronze Award is supposed to be sustainable. Also, I have no idea how to go about planting trees in public spaces, so the girls have to figure out what it costs, how to pay for it, who to ask about doing it, and all those details to figure out if this is a project they can do. Their other possibility is doing a badge workshop for Daisy scouts to earn a journey. They are still researching possibilities. They’ve also started their Trail Adventure badge. They did the prep work and they will go on their actual trail adventures at our fall campout and at a Trefoil Trail Run the Girl Scouts are running. The daisies are going to go on a 1K trail run at Post Oak Lodge too! So fun =)

Serenity has a lot to work on this year at school. It’s the first year of band, so she’s playing her clarinet. Just carrying the instruments back and forth from school three times a week is a lot. She’s in the 6th grade math class and absolutely loving it. She definitely likes the way cpm math works. Her new teachers are really nice! She got to dissect an owl pellet in science and thought that was awesome. She also tries to get a little exercise every morning to help wake herself up. We got several clocks and the morning routine is a little better I think. We’ll see in the winter, but I haven’t had to drag her out of bed yet.
Serenity’s class had a bread day where everyone brought a type of bread that’s traditional for their family. There was naan, and tortillas, chinese dumplings, and all kinds of things to try. Serenity made orange rolls, which we make for Thanksgiving every year from scratch. She did it all by herself, and it’s not easy!

On Saturdays Serenity goes to Clark Youth Theater for improv classes. She says she loves acting and the classes are a blast. I think it’s awesome! Last Saturday she also went to the library for a Creative Writing Workshop. She loves making up stories in her head, usually fan fiction about her favorite fictional worlds. She’s made new dragons in the Wings of Fire world, GemWings. She’s working now on a story about Warrior cats and she has several fun characters with detailed descriptions and backstories. I love it! I just wish she would write more down so I could read it, most of it is up in her head. =)
