December 7th: Girl Scouts and New Books! img_2468_edited

For our advent calendar we got new books to read!  I got Serenity Fridays with the Wizards, the latest in the Tuesdays at the Castle series.  We also got a Team Umizoomi Christmas and an ABCs of Christmas book, which excited all the kids =)

Most of the day was spent getting ready for Girl Scouts.  I had an ambitious list of stuff to get done!  We started by filling the eye pillows the girls had sewed throughout the month and finishing them.  I ran out of thread so I had to take the last ten home to sew shut, but the rest are already in the office and they are all done now!  It was a great introductory sewing project and a great service project for the troop!  And the daisy troop at the school filled some too, so they got to help.  I’m told they loved it and made a great mess.

After that was finished, the girls did a water cycle game.  I had beads corresponding to nine different places a drop of water could go.  Lillyan explained evaporation, condensation, and precipitation with a little help, and then the girls set off on their water drop adventure.  Each station had a dice that they could roll to see where their bead went, either to glaciers, clouds, river, lake, ocean, plants, animal, soil or groundwater.  It was very fun, except when the dice started getting mixed up.  The girls at the cloud station got stuck because they got a dice that said cloud, cloud, stay, stay, stay, stay.  That was the ocean dice!  They straightened it out though.  When we got home, Serenity wrote this story about her water drop:

My Little Waterdrop

This story will take you on an exciting journey of the life of a water drop.  This little waterdrop happened to start in the clouds.  Then it dropped down and froze into a glacier.  When it melted it went into the ocean.  Then it went back up into the clouds.  Ocean. Cloud.  Ocean.  Cloud.  The drop was getting bored with the pattern so it headed into a lake.  It stayed there for three more days.  It got bored again so it went into a river.  It was nice there so that water drop stayed there a day but then it evaporated into the clouds.  It happened to drop into a different lake.  It stayed there two days and then it flowed into the river.  It liked rivers.  Back to the lake.  Now it wanted something exciting and different, so it went underground as groundwater.  It liked it there, until it went back to the river.  Then an ANIMAL drank it up!  Once it got out it found itself in the soil.  Then it got sucked up into a plant!  Then it returned to the clouds!  So this little drop kept finding new places to go.  It enjoyed its’ adventure, but then it was tired and fell asleep in the clouds.

So fun!img_0218 img_0239

Serenity, Abby, Kayla and Wren took turns describing things they learned at the Discovery Lab water exhibit. We settled on a Wow project =)
