Maia's 7th Birthday Update
Maia is 7 years old! She is such a fun, feisty, snuggly girl! She gives the absolute best hugs. I love being her Mama!!! She loves her siblings and makes up all kinds of crazy games to play with them.
She wants to be a builder when she grows up, and jumps at any chance to use a tool or help build something, whether it’s building a birdhouse with Papa or helping put up Christmas lights using the extension pole. She builds with Legos too! She also loves cooking, and watches and re-watches the Great British Baking Show. She’s recreated Battenberg cakes, Bakewell Tarts, and Kim-Joy’s orange blossom cookies.

She plays lots of games these days, especially Legendary with Daddy! She loves reading and loves to surround herself with her Rainbow Magic Fairies books, reading one after another. We did a summer book club, and Maia read tons of books. Usually she wanted to do food related projects, so the week she reread Rainbow Magic she made mermaid cookies and a rainbow fruit tray. She also asked me to read her the first Ranger’s Apprentice book aloud. It was so much fun her siblings joined us and we read the first five books in the series! She loves being sneaky and surprising us!

Despite spending most of the year in quarantine, she still loves being a Girl Scout! She got to do her first cookie sale this year, and rocked it! She achieved her goal and more, and split the prizes with Serenity and Donovan. She earned her Between Earth and Sky journey thanks to Serenity’s troop teaching the badge requirements, and did the Garden Journey in the fall with Grandma. She earned a Space Science badge, an outdoor art badge, all her petals, and many more! She made her Valentine’s box into a Girl Scout rainbow daisy, and she colors that Daisy on most of the art she brings home from school. She also says art is her favorite class! Her troop also did one event in the fall which I had been wanting to do for a long time, they made a scarecrow for the Botanic Garden! Maia named her Crowette and we made the body with things we found around the house. It was adorable! (We were inspired by the dinosaur unit they studied in the fall, so she looks a bit like an archaeopteryx. Maia told us one night that we were eating dinosaurs (chicken nuggets. Chickens have S necks and feathers, = dinosaurs).
Maia loves Silly Scents! She loves the smell of them, and will color pages solid with color. Or she’ll happily color herself! One day she was coloring on the couch, and Eric walked in and asked how everyone was doing, and she took a biiiiig sniff and said, “I’m HAPPY!” It was such a fun stage we picked it as the theme for her birthday party!

One of my favorite new sayings, courtesy of Maia: “Cliffhangry” That’s the way you feel when a show or book ends on a cliffhanger. It’s a really useful word! Another funny thing Maia said this year: sarCasm. Some parents, when their kids mispronounce words adorably, threaten anyone that might correct them. I don’t have to worry about that with Maia, because she will not listen to corrections. She is adamant. Her current word is sarcasm. Pronounced sarCASM, emphasis on the second syllable. “You three are using sarCASM. I can tell when you’re using sarcasm you know.” . Yay for recognizing sarcasm! It’s an important skill in this family . Also, while reading over my shoulder as I scrolled through facebook, she saw a picture of a girl dressed as Thor that said, Smash the Patriarchy. After I explained what that meant, she shrugged and said “I’m amenable to that.”
Food-wise she still loves blueberries most of all, followed closely by strawberries. She eats a lot of almond butter biscuits, and she usually picks out the filling to eat first, and doesn’t always finish the cookie part. It’s messy and delicious. She also is addicted to eating ice. I even got her sonic ice cube trays so she could have softer ice to eat.
She absolutely loves dirt. The girl will fill her shoes with sand or dirt every day on the playground. I have no idea what the plan is but she certainly has one. She loves to use the scooter and visit the greenbelt. She is really strong and loves climbing on things! Fearless! She always tells me, “Don’t worry!” I laugh because it doesn’t work that way, but she is confident that she can do whatever she has decided on!

In February Maia got to go to California with Daddy by herself! Eric worked from “home” and Maia got to have Ann and John all to herself. It was just before the pandemic craziness and she had such a wonderful visit!!
March 2020, Virtual School! Maia’s teachers did an amazing job of keeping the kids connected and engaged during the crazy beginning of the pandemic. Maia loved zooming with her teachers and sharing pictures with them! Mrs. Elliott sent her a Flat Mrs. Elliott to read with in the mail, which she still has in her room. She loves it! Mrs. Widdoes sent a hug, two cut outs of her hand with a string to wrap around her. So much fun and creativity! Maia loves school, and it’s obvious why!
