Hi.

Welcome!

Girl Scouts Summer 2020

Girl Scouts Summer 2020

Thanks to Serenity’s troop, Maia earned her Between Earth and Sky journey!  She learned lots of interesting things about the environment, did experiments with flowers, listened to stories, learned more about pollination, and took action to help pollinators by planting flowers and making bird feeders!  It was a lot of fun, even though we did it virtually instead of at a big event in my backyard.  She posted pics of all her activities to share with her Girl Scout sisters.  It was a fun way to connect even while social distancing!  Maia made a “Skills Shirt” to earn her Firefly award in the Between Earth and Sky journey. She brainstormed her skills and we wrote them on this shirt! She’s strong, kind, funny, good at climbing, cooking, and snuggling. She’s great at reading, helping, building, decorating, and she has a great imagination!  When we delivered the supplies to Elle’s house, Serenity came up with social distance chalking.  She would draw half a heart and then back up six feet and Elle could finish drawing the heart.  It was adorable.

I also planned a drop off badge kit for her troop, which we all had fun with!  I had bought supplies to make galaxy jars, so I filled out the plan with a few more activities and drove to all the girls to drop them off.  I could not stop shaking the sample I made . I might need to buy another case of these and make them for everyone   The rest of the kids included: Cookie prizes, Space Science badge, Galaxy art: black paper and directions, Shadow puppet, Alka Seltzer rockets: instructions, film canisters, coloring sheets to decorate the canister, and Alka seltzer, Galaxy stress ball in case anyone else was stressed , Planet jokes, and the Galaxy glitter jar materials: in the bottle is glycerin, I taped it shut and labeled it so hopefully no one drank it , there are two colors of glitter, star sequins, and instructions. Maia loved all the activities, and we still use our glitter jars.  The rocket was a lot of fun too!  We discovered it takes awhile to pop! And definitely not to stand over it because it really goes off like a rocket it hit the ceiling of our patio!

Later in the summer I signed Maia up for a Civics badge workshop online.  She still loves earning badges!  The video took about 20 minutes and they set us up with instructions for two activities, writing a letter to an elected official and making our own White House using any media.

Serenity decided she wanted to finish one last Girl Scout Journey.  Girl Scout journey craft! Recycled beads and an energy pledge. I think her plan is to follow me and turn off every light I turn on, Eric Peter Wainright is thrilled

Lots of people are getting quarantine pets, ours is a tree . His name is currently Carmine but that is still under some debate.

We’d been talking about planting more trees since Serenity planted the Cherokee Princess dogwood, but she had been researching carbon footprints for her Get Moving journey so Serenity asked if we could plant one now! She looked up pictures of trees, decided on a weeping tree, either crabapple or cherry depending on availability, called garden centers around town, called Papa Jess Bair to pick it up for us, and paid using the credit card herself. Then she danced all over the house saying she felt powerful, which I think is the whole point of a Girl Scout journey . She also called the tree service to come find out what is wrong with the maple in our front yard to see if it can be saved. So many phone calls I don’t have to make . I love it.

Donovan did a lot of the digging. Maia did some but she was mostly on Worm Duty. She greeted every worm we uncovered, picked it up gently in her hands, and moved it over to the loose dirt pile so it wouldn’t dry out.
