Hi.

Welcome!

Maia Spring 2020

Maia adores the Rainbow Magic Fairy series! She even dressed up as the Red Fairy one day!

Maia LOVES the music from Frozen 2.  Her favorite songs are Lost in the Woods and Show Yourself.  She loves singing them in the car with her siblings.  They’ve each taken different parts that they love to sing.  She also loves When I Am Older.  Her favorite part to sing is Olaf.  We went with her Girl Scout friends to see the movie, and she loved it too!

Maia’s favorite thing at school is art class!  This is awesome because she used to not like holding pencils at all!  She’s been working really hard at that and now she loves coloring.  Especially with her Silly Scents markers, crayons and pencils.  She doesn’t usually do coloring sheets, she mostly does it by scent. =)

Maia made this happy sheet that one of the second grade teachers posted. She drew things that made her happy, hearts with different scents in each one! She adores silly scents!

Maia’s still reading a ton of books!  She’s gone through the entire Rainbow Magic Fairy collection, and Donovan even let her move them into her bookshelf.  She adores the Rescue Princess books, and has read all of those now.  She got a couple other series too, like Unicorn Princesses.  She still loves picture books, and she loves it when I get a pile of books at the library.  She always asks if I got any for her.  I love it!  Sometimes we snuggle and I read to her, and sometimes we snuggle up, each with our own book.

Maia is an extremely dedicated and enthusiastic Girl Scout!  She made her Valentine’s box into a Girl Scout Daisy.  She colored a petal for each of the Daisy petal patches, had me write what the petal stands for, and then attached them to an oatmeal canister to hold her Valentine cards.  It was SO cute!  It was the result of a lot of crafting consultation though.  I was trying to convince her to start with a shoebox so she had enough room to hold her cards, and attach daisies to that somehow.  But she wanted a dimensional flower, so when we finally found the oatmeal container in the inventor box we had a brilliant flash of how it could be done!  So much fun!

She also had her first ever cookie sale.  She and Serenity worked together to reach a goal of 300 boxes, and they did that in the first week of sales!  So they added a stretch goal of 350.  I was so proud of her!  She was a little reticent at first, but she got to the point that she spoke to customers.  She didn’t need many reminders to say thank you, and she totally rocked the cookie math and change.  She did a great job!  She sold at Papa’s house, sitting at the booth for several hours.  She went with Serenity to Eric’s work, and she did a little door to door.  She astonished one lady by knowing the whole Girl Scout Law.  She’s amazing.  It was a great first year!.

Maia gives the best hugs.  When she delivered cookies to her Aunt Jen, I got a picture of it.  She wraps her legs all the way around you and her arms and it’s just the best.  Molly liked it so much she needed an in person cookie deliver too =)

So far this spring we have started our Space Science badge.  They learned about shadows, doing shadow puppets, building with lego duplos, and making shadows to trace with their buildings.  They also earned Mari, the Responsible for What I Say and Do petal.  They made responsibility cupcakes with different chores and actions they can be responsible for, and brainstormed ways to be responsible in different situations with their Junior Buddies.  Like if they lost their friend’s pencil, what should they do?  They all had different answers, and they were all very responsible!

She’s singing “You’ve got to Accentuate the Positive” nonstop.  I love it!  Mrs. Call sent it home for us and it’s the best handwashing song ever.

I was chatting with the older kids about some school projects that they had done in the past, thinking maybe we would do some fun Newbery type projects. Maia asked “what’s a diorama?” After she learned what it was she got right to work! She’s been writing stories about a little deer for her Creative Producers project, so she made her a habitat . She insisted it needed to be really well lit

Maia wanted to post her Science video! She’s testing to see if her rocks react with vinegar, to learn if they have calcium carbonate and are sedimentary. She asked for science glasses because safety first. And it turns out it’s a good thing she put on the glasses because she shook her dropper and got Donovan in the face with vinegar. Also, Donovan is super jealous she gets to experiment on more than one rock friend. So one bonus of online learning

Maia’s awesome teacher Mrs. Widdoes has been teaching them about weather so Maia made a weather forecast... complete with green screen and lightning! DZ suggested using his bed built by Papa and now it’s a meteorology studio and hideout.

April 2020

I was trying to think of something productive to accomplish with my Saturday, fortunately Maia is happy to come up with plans. I have a cardboard apprentice . Pirate ship designed by Maia, with some fun physics of figuring out how to get the mast to stay up. Sometimes it’s a submarine . Also, I keep finding her pet rock looking at me

Girl Scout Journey:  Maia got to do a color experiment thanks to the Junior troop’s Bronze Award delivery! She was very excited to see her flowers this morning! We ended up with some chromatography color separation on the purple!

Maia’s word of the day: Cliffhangry. The feeling you get when your parent turns off the show at an exciting point and you NEED one more episode.

Tons of bubble fun, yay science and Dr. Hamby!
