The best part about Halloween this year was definitely having John and Ann here! Donovan had decided he wanted to be Batman way back when we visited California the last time, in fact I bought the black fabric for his cape at my favorite California fabric shop. So John decided that he would be the Riddler. We had a green bowler hat that I had bought last St. Patrick's Day (I love the Target dollar spot =) and he bought a green shirt that we covered with sticker question marks. The best part of his costume though was his book of riddles. He especially loved to ask "What's black and white and read all over?" Surprising how many kids have no idea what a newspaper is. =) Ann dressed up as Batgirl. Serenity designed her own costume. She was BatCat. Batman's pet cat =) She had a black furry tail, claws that she cut out herself sewn to gloves, and her cat ears. Both kids loved "catching" the Riddler, holding John's hand as they trick or treated. And they also loved holding hands with their teammate BatGirl. Now Eric was Green Arrow. I made him a quiver, a Robin Hood style hat, and green leather armbands. We added a sleeveless green hoodie, and a bow and arrow set from Target. It was such a cool costume, and he wore his hat all weekend =) However, he only visited one house with us since he didn't want to strain his poor ankle. I planned to dress up as Wonder Woman, but once again I didn't get as far as making my own costume. Next year I'm making mine first since I never fail to finish the children's costumes =) The kids came home and immediately went through their stash, trading things they don't eat for dumdums from our candy bowl, and giving all the peanut butter cups to John and the Almond Joys to Ann. Eric claimed kitkats and crunch bars. =)
We had a lot of Halloween fun at our school's annual Halloween Carnival as well. The carnival had a Medieval theme to match the book fair. Donovan dressed up in his knight costume and carried his sword from Cinderella's table and his shield from Legoland. Serenity dressed in her white Cinderella dress, because she made it her mission to wear every princess costume in her closet after our Disney trip. She wore Elsa, Rapunzel and Belle in Disney, and she wore Snow White to school for princess day, so she had to do Cinderella =)
The carnival was a blast! I made a new game, Storm the Castle. I made three castle turrets out of huge cardboard tubes and painted them to look like castles. The kids threw balls into each successive tower, just the grand prize game from Bozo the Clown. It was fun! This year, instead of having candy at every booth, we gave out stamps and the kids got to spend them at a booth like at Chuck E Cheese. I think it was pretty popular, although we gave out a lot less candy since more people went for the prizes instead.
