Maia’s Birthday Party!

Maia had a My Little Pony birthday party!  Or Maia Little Pony I should say.  It was obviously a dream come true for me as I adored My Little Pony as a child.  She fell in love with my Rainbow Dash and Serenity’s Twilight Sparkle from Build a Bear and had been playing with them for awhile.  And reading all the pony books we could get our hands on.  After I took her for her first Build a Bear outing and she chose Pinkie Pie, I was sure the My Little Pony theme wasn’t just me.  Plus, she loves getting to ride ponies at carnivals and the pumpkin patch.  So I called the lady who brought ponies to Serenity’s Unicorn Birthday party, and she was available November 18th!  It was a little early for Maia’s birthday, since her actual birthday is the 18th of December, but I actually like that.  It’s nice to spread out her presents and to be able to decorate for her party and not have it be Christmassy.

As far as party decorations, I went crazy with cardboard.  Mom’s new house is almost finished and she saved a ton of cardboard for me!  So I used her refrigerator and oven boxes to make a huge Canterlot Castle.  The newest incarnation of the castle is a lot different from the one I had growing up.  It’s purple and gold, with minarets and lots of crazy towers and shapes.  So it was really fun to try and make it out of cardboard. =)  I had some turrets left over from a Medieval themed Halloween Carnival that I painted purple to add more shapes.  A little bit of glitter foam and duct tape for color and just a bit of painting to make things pop.  Mom suggested using cellophane on the windows to make them look like stained glass.  I didn’t have cellophane but clear contact paper and tissue paper worked pretty well!  I even added Christmas lights.  The lights shining through the tissue paper windows was especially pretty.  Behind the castle I put a couple mattresses for the kids to have a comfy place to sit or realistically to bounce on.  Donovan and Maia slept there the night after the party.  We moved the castle to Maia’s room and she’s had her siblings sleep over several nights now, so this was definitely a successful cardboard endeavor.

The outside decorations were all thanks to Papa.  He had built a cool wooden frame that we used to take pony pictures with at Serenity’s unicorn party.  We repainted it purple for Maia and he cut out the My Little Pony logo using his projector.  I painted it and he attached it to the sign to make the perfect backdrop for the pony rides!  So pretty!

For party favors I made Pegasus wings, pony tails, and I bought unicorn headbands so the kids could get all dressed up as ponies.  I even printed my own cutie mark tattoos, which were really fun!  A lot of the kids actually wore the wings and they were all soo cute.  Maia wanted to be Princess Celestia, so I made her a special pair of wings with a sun cutie mark, and a tail that matched Celestia’s.  Serenity asked for Princess Cadance, and Donovan wanted to be Princess Luna.  Fortunately I had all those colors in my felt and fleece stashes so it was easy enough to do!  I was so proud that I used up so much fleece making the pony tails that I can actually close that tub for the first time since Serenity’s Animal Jam party.  Woo hoo!  Of course, my felt tub is overflowing with scraps from the Pegasus wings but that’s another issue.

My amazing sister Jennifer made an enormous cake for Maia.  It was beautiful, with a Celestia figure on top that Maia loves.  The cake was sooo yummy.  I’m pretty excited that one of my kids wants cake on her birthday =)

Maia was so excited when the ponies arrived!  She wanted to ride the unicorn first, but she loved both ponies and rode them each several times.  I think everyone got to ride as many times as they wanted.  They also got to give the ponies treats and brush them.  So fun!

Halfway through the party Eric and I realized we had forgotten fishing!  Fortunately I’d randomly bought a few My Little Pony mystery figures, and with that and the leftover prizes from the summer birthdays Eric managed to pull it together at the last minute.  Whew.  I don’t know why we forget that for Maia’s party, one year we actually did miss it!  It’s almost first on our list in the summer, maybe we just don’t like ice fishing?!?

It was a great birthday!  Maia’s already starting to plan her next party so I’d say she’s entered into the spirit of birthday fun =)
